My favourite latest from the web: National Jew-Graphic, North Korea, glass gem corn and more

The Amazing Rabbis singing Sound of Silence

wait but why about North Korea

I can only imagine that this website is getting a huge amount of traffic. The writer, Tim Urban, creates highly intelligent and laugh-out-loud funny articles on an array of topics. I read an amazing one by him about why my generation is unhappy (I totally got the story he told) and most recently I read a fascinating inside look at the world’s black hole—North Korea. I highly recommend giving this piece the time it necessitates considering all the photos, videos and links.

Read the piece to learn why this video is unbelievably disturbing.

And while you’re on the site, don’t forget to check out the hysterical About page.

The guy leaving a voice mail message about a car accident

Just press play and weep from laughter.

Random people conducting an orchestra

I must say this video seems to confirm all of our suspicion, that orchestras really do not need a conducter all the time.

Improve Everywhere had a small orchestra sit on a sidewalk in New York city and put up a conductor’s stand that anyone was invited to come up and use. Sweetness ensued.

Glass gem corn

You won’t believe that this is real corn but it is. There are people who are expert glass gem corn growers. It’s breathtaking.

Take a look.

Colour footage from the Jewish quarter in Warsaw

I’ve come to believe that one of the things that inhibits us from getting the Holocaust, or many other events in history, is the lack of colour in the photos of that time.

Here is a short movie with footage of Jews in Warsaw. It’s lovely and terribly sad all at once.

National Jew-Graphic Original Film

Such a cute video about Israeli religious and secular.

Kids performing a song with cup for percussion

Click to watch it on Facebook. It’s amazing!

The bumper sticker song

A famous Israeli writer, David Grossman, wrote a whole song (a rap, actually) based on Israeli bumper stickers. Israel is an intense place and so the politics are intense and yes, even the bumper stickers. The idea of writing a whole song based on bumper stickers… genius, if you ask me.

Create an oil spill on any website

I’ve made a resolution only to post things here that elicit a relatively strong emotional reaction in me. So, here you go. I found this through Mashable.

The site is called Instant Oil Spill. Geez, everything has to be instant these days, doesn’t it… On the front page it says:

That’s right, now you can have all the same disregard for the environment (albeit virtual) that big oil does everyday! Why should they get to have all the fun?

Simply enter the web address of the site you’d like to contaminate and watch the spill happen.

Note: This doesn’t really harm other websites. We’re not complete a**holes! ;)

Check out the site and entre a URL into the space to watch the oil spill take over the site. Good times, ay?

Proud (hilarious) Canadian quotes for Canada Day

A Canadian Goose

Today being Canada Day and all, and me being a very proud Canadian, I’ve been waiting to come across something smart enough to post here. Finally my dear cousin posted this amazing list of very amusing quotes about Canada. Read the whole list here. And here are a few of my faves:

Canada is the greatest nation in this country. – Former Toronto mayor Allan Lamport

Your majesty, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and Madame Houde thanks you from her bottom too. – Montreal Mayor Camillien Houde (in 1939 to King George VI)

As always, Canada will now bury its war dead, just as the rest of the world, as always, will forget its sacrifice, just as it always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does. It seems that Canada’s historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored. Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance.- Kevin Myers (The Daily Telegraph, London)

A constitution nursed upon the oxygen of our bright winter atmosphere makes its owner feel as though he could toss about the pine trees in his glee. – Lord Dufferin

Canadians have been so busy explaining to the Americans that we aren’t British, and to the British that we aren’t Americans that we haven’t had time to become Canadians. – Helen Gordon McPherson

Oh, what a country! – Deena :)

Omigosh, hilarious Israeli bumper sticker

This is a bumper sticker seen recently in Israel (translated from Hebrew):

“We demand an international investigation to determine why the US built two tall towers that interfered with a humanitarian peace flight by al Quaeda on 9/11.”

BTW, I don’t even know if this bumper sticker really exists but still someone somewhere thought of this line which is oh so smart and in this case, that is what matters.
